Ramp saves 30K hours and automates 5M receipts monthly with Microsoft Azure AI Platform

Ramp aimed to eliminate manual finance workflows, reduce developer friction and scale fast, while maintaining speed, accuracy and security across its platform.

To achieve this, Ramp built a custom OCR tool using Microsoft Azure AI and Document Intelligence, automating finance workflows, enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring speed, accuracy and security across its platform.

Now, Ramp saves 30K hours of manual work monthly, processes 5 million receipts and empowers its customers to scale and move faster than ever, focusing on what matters most, and leading to higher customer satisfaction and greater operational efficiency.

Ramp

Ramp is one of the fastest-growing startups in the U.S., landing consistently on top innovation lists for redefining how businesses manage spend. With a mission to help customers save their two most valuable resources–time and money–Ramp offers a modern suite of corporate cards, expense management and bill-pay solutions built for speed and simplicity. To fuel its rapid growth, deliver even better customer experiences and empower its workforce at scale, Ramp focused on time-consuming manual tasks that can quietly drain hours of the day, like tracking receipts or paying multi-line invoices.

“Nobody likes filing expense reports,” says Rahul Sengottuvelu, Head of Applied AI at Ramp. “And when you're paying lots of bills, especially long ones with dozens of line items, it can take up a lot of your time.”

Ramp set out to eliminate as much friction as possible.

Rahul adds: “We wanted it to be as simple as swiping a card and texting the receipt, with Ramp handling the rest.”

That forward-thinking vision called for a modern solution: one that could scale with Ramp’s ambitions and meet the expectations of enterprise-grade customers. Powered by Microsoft Azure AI services and Microsoft Azure AI Document Intelligence, Ramp built a custom OCR tool that lets users simply text or upload a receipt.

Behind the scenes, Azure’s AI services automatically extract, categorize and enrich the data, turning raw documents into structured, usable insights in seconds. This seamless automation empowers Ramp to deliver fast, accurate and secure finance workflows at scale.

Less manual, more automation

Ramp’s goal of a seamless experience became a reality at scale. With its custom-built OCR technology, Ramp now automates what used to be hours of repetitive admin work.

  • 30,000 hours of manual work saved per month

  • 400,000 invoices and 5 million receipts processed monthly

  • 90%+ accuracy on OCR fields

“Time savings is the biggest feedback we get. Customers can finally focus on what matters, growing their business instead of chasing receipts,” says Colin Kennedy, Chief Business Officer at Ramp.

Each automated receipt saves up to a minute. Multiply that by millions, and it’s not just time–it’s momentum gained.

"We run about 5 million reimbursements and receipts monthly. If each one saves even 15 seconds, that adds up fast,” explains Andrew Gu, Senior Software Engineer at Ramp.

Small team, right partner, big results

Ramp’s lean but highly skilled team built and deployed its custom OCR solution in under a week. Leveraging the power of Azure Document Intelligence, Azure AI services as the foundation, and using tools like Microsoft Visual Studio to accelerate development and deepen visibility into what’s happening under the hood.

Colin Kennedy shares the reason behind choosing Microsoft solutions. “We picked Azure because it’s best-in-class for AI-powered solutions. The reliability, low latency and cost benefits are unmatched.”

Scalability and the responsiveness of the Microsoft team, who provided fast, informed support at every stage, were also key factors.

“Whenever we have questions, the Microsoft Unified team answers quickly and clearly, which makes it easier to keep growing fast,” continues Colin Kennedy.

“We love being able to move fast. With prebuilt Azure models in Document Intelligence, our teams stay unblocked and keep building,” adds Rahul Sengottuvelu.

Built for builders: empowering developers

Ramp’s culture is built on supporting both customers and employees–and that means giving internal teams the same seamless, high-performance tools they offer to their users.

Colin Kennedy explains: “Our job is to delight employees the same way we delight customers. That includes helping our finance teams close books faster and giving developers what they need to build faster.”

Encouraged by the success of OCR, Ramp decided to expand its use of Azure, migrating DevOps processes to the platform to unlock greater speed and efficiency for its developers. With Azure as the foundation for DevOps and GitHub Copilot embedded in daily workflows, Ramp’s engineers are shipping code faster, with fewer blockers and more visibility.

The team also benefits from GitHub's hosted runners, which are flexible and scalable enough to reduce the need for managing internal CI infrastructure, saving valuable engineering resources. GitHub Actions allows Ramp to run continuous integration pipelines in parallel, speeding up testing and unblocking engineers. Logs and outputs are now centralized within GitHub’s interface, giving teams a complete view in one place and accelerating iteration cycles.

In just one month, Ramp developers logged:

  • 2.7 million GitHub Actions minutes

  • 965,000 GitHub Actions runs

“Almost every engineer uses GitHub Copilot, it’s part of how we build. You notice when it’s not there,” enthuses Rahul Sengottuvelu.

Expanding impact, sharing success

With the Microsoft foundation in place, the team is scaling even faster than before, serving new markets and launching more integrations.

“We’re not just a fast-growing startup–we’re also earning the trust of large enterprise customers. Microsoft has been a key partner in that journey,” Amanda Carroccio, Product Partnerships, AI and Strategic Tech at Ramp.

From Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations to Microsoft Entra, Ramp continues to expand its product integrations–powered by Azure and backed by Microsoft’s enterprise-grade security, performance and reliability.

Ramp is also committed to paying that success forward by sharing what they’ve learned.

Colin Kennedy advises for other fast-scaling companies: “It is important to make sure your partner truly understands your space and the challenges companies like yours face”.

He continues: “The quality of the people you work with makes all the difference. For Ramp, that’s definitely been the Microsoft team.”

Always-on ambition, always for the customer

Ramp is growing fast, but it’s doing so with purpose. One thing drives every decision: customer experience. That commitment shows in Ramp’s top-tier Net Promoter Score (NPS), and it’s shaping where the organization goes next.

“The NPS of both the end user and the finance leader matters deeply to us,” confirms Colin Kennedy. “We want every part of the experience to be exceptional.”

Customer needs are guiding Ramp’s next moves: expanding into procurement, serving larger enterprises and continuing to support a growing community of finance professionals who want smarter, faster, more unified tools.

“We’re excited by what excites our customers. That means going broader, building a platform that solves everything connected to expense, travel and procurement,” he adds.

Ramp also plans to explore more use cases with Azure, especially around specialized AI models and agents–with an eye on scale and impact.

“We pride ourselves on being the most reliable solution a finance team can use. That means partnering with the most dependable platforms–and for us, that certainly includes Microsoft Azure,” concludes Colin Kennedy.
